Guy L. "Gus" Gesswein

January 6, 1939 - April 29, 2009

Memorialized by:
Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg, VA

Guy Louis "Gus" Gesswein, 70, of Fredericksburg, passed away Wednesday, April 29, 2009, at his home surrounded by his loving family, following a long battle with brain cancer.

Gus was born on January 6, 1939, in Baltimore, MD, and was a true-blue Baltimore Colts fan. After high school he joined the Navy and spent most of his enlisted time in Whidbey Island near Seattle, WA. Back in Baltimore he worked at the A&P Tea company and then as a fireman at BWI airport. He became an Air Traffic Controller in 1970 and moved to Leesburg VA working out of the Washington ATC Center. He was a proud member of the Professional Air Traffic Controllers Organization, PATCO. In 1984 he moved to Fredericksburg VA working as a courier in and around northern Virginia. He later worked for MT&T Heating and Air Conditioning until retiring to care for his mother-in-law.

Gus loved softball and played a mean second base. He gave his daughters and grandchildren a love of the game and was always involved with their teams. He enjoyed traveling, camping with the So-We-Go Sams, tinkering with cars, and wedding receptions. He volunteered as a tour guide at Chatham Manor and with the American Legion, driving veterans to the DAV hospital in Richmond. If someone needed a hand, Gus would be there. His favorite past time was being with his family, friends, and his dog Penny. The brain tumor journey was long and tough but Gus handled it like he did life with a teasing humor, uncomplaining bravery, and a deep faith. Although he will be greatly missed by family and friends, all rejoice knowing he can once again talk, laugh, and maybe even drive!

Gus is survived by his loving wife, Gwen; four daughters, Vicki Morris and husband Bob of Orange Park FL, Donna Euler and husband Skip of Hedgesville WV, Wendy Guthrie and husband Joe of Fredericksburg, Michelle Faggetter of Spotsylvania, and fourteen wonderful grandchildren; his mother, Melvina Gesswein of Lutherville MD; sister Edith Serio of Medford NJ; brothers Phillip Gesswein of Lutherville MD and Louis Gesswein and wife Nancy of Street MD. Gus was preceded in death by his father, Louis W. Gesswein.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 2, 2009 from 4:30 to 6:00 PM at Mullins & Thompson Funeral Service, Fredericksburg Chapel with a memorial service at 6:00 PM. Inurnment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Gus' name to:
